Information for First-Year Students

What’s the assignment?

All first-year Michigan State University students are expected to have read “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” before arriving on campus for the fall 2011 semester. There is no written assignment, although MSU students may want to use the provided questions to provoke thinking about the book.

How will I use this book?
Jonathan Safran Foer, author of “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,” will speak to incoming freshmen on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011 at the MSU Academic Welcome. Students will likely be involved in a discussion of the book in residence halls, attend theme-related events on campus and in the community and find the book assigned in freshman courses.

How do I obtain a copy of the book?
Students will receive a copy of the book at the Academic Orientation Program (AOP) check-in and will be charged $10 as part of their fall semester bill. If students choose to return the book at AOP, it must be returned to the Academic Orientation Office in Center Court, Wilson Hall, before checking out of AOP. If you decide to return the copy of the book provided to you, you are still responsible for acquiring and reading the book.

Why have a required reading assignment before the beginning of school?
Welcome to college life! The One Book, One Community program is an introduction to academic life and also gives new students something to talk about with each other. A series of community and campus events are planned for this fall around the themes in “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close.”
